There are three main groups of society that use the polygraph for various purposes.
They include law enforcement agencies, the legal community, and private citizens.
Law Enforcement Agencies – Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies such as Police and Sheriff's Departments use the polygraph during investigations of criminal matters and for pre-employment processes.
Legal Communities - U.S. , District Attorney and Public Defender Offices, Defense Attorneys and Probation and Parole Departments use the polygraph to investigate cases and as a maintenance/monitoring tool.
Private Sector - Businesses and Corporations sometimes use the polygraph under certain conditions under the restrictions and limitations of the Employee Polygraph Protection Act of 1988 (EPPA). Private citizens use the polygraph in legal and personal matters such as integrity issues and civil litigation.
